Ultrasound Neurological Assessment (NeuroUS)

The Ultrasound Neurological Assessment course has been created for Emergency and Critical Care specialists. The first day the course will give basic knowledge of Transcranial Doppler, then it will specifically cover different pathologies present in the ICU or ER (SAH, TBI….) and their management with Transcranial Doppler. During the first afternoon session, practical experience can be gained in different Transcranial Doppler approaches (optic nerve sheath evaluation, parenchymal echography, arterial Doppler) with healthy volunteers. Clinical cases will be presented and discussed at the end of the afternoon. The second day will be dedicated to the clinical evaluation of ICU patients with Transcranial Doppler. The participants will have the opportunity to realize full TCD examinations on ICU patients and then discuss in a dedicated session their results.

HOT INSTRUCTION - NeuroUS

  • 4 Workstations (A1,A2,A3,A4)
  • 2 hours of practical works
  • 1 rounds
    • HOT 1 = first day <(120 min)
  • 4 Groups (3-4 people for each)
  • Rotation
    • HOT 1 = every 30 min
  • Healty models, laptop, simulations

PRACTICAL TOPICS & TRAINERS

HOT 1 Session (Day 1)

WORKST 1 – Brain echography
Each trainee should obtain on a healthy volunteer a brain view with detection of midline brain, brainstem and ventricles. Each trainee should: a) recognize the view, b) judge quality of the image, c) indicate the visualized structure.

WORKST 2 – Middle Cerebral Artery
Each trainee should obtain on a healthy volunteer through temporal window an adequate evaluation of ACM (measeres of main velocities and IP).

WORKST 3 – Ant/Post cerebral arteries / Basilar artery
Each trainee should obtain on a healthy volunteer through temporal window an adequate evaluation of posterior cerebral artery, anterior cerebral artery and basilar artery (measures of main velocities and IP).

WORKST 4 – Optical Nerve echography
Each trainee should obtain on a healthy volunteer adequate optical nerve evaluation (comment technique, adequacy of image, visualized structures. Each trainee should: recognize the view, judge quality of the image and indicate the visualized structure.

HOT 2 Session (Day 2)

Second day will be dedicated to the clinical evaluation of ICU patients with Transcranial Doppler. The participants will have the opportunity to realize full TCD examinations on ICU patients and then discuss in a dedicated session their results.
